Summary:
The present contribution concerns the basic value of „human dignity“ on which the universal and european standard of human rights protection is based. This value is inherent in many international documents and treaties, above all in the UN Charter, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and in the Charter of fundamental rights of the European Union. The constant case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and of the Court of Justice of the European Union reflects the dominant position of the human dignity as a basic value having priority when confronted with other human rights and freedoms.
